This week featuring:
This is Not a Test: The Chicago Sound Experience. Listen to a selection of local, national and international sound artist recordings on the Great Lawn's state-of-the-art sound system. These field recordings, experimental works and abstract compositions will investigate time, place and space in the city of Chicago and beyond.

About The Jay Pritzker Pavilion:
Frank Gehry, winner of the National Medal of Art, applied his signature style to this revolutionary outdoor concert venue. The Pavilion stands 120-feet high, with a billowing headdress of brushed stainless steel ribbons that frame the stage opening and connect to an overhead trellis of crisscrossing steel pipes. The trellis supports the sound system, which spans the 4,000 fixed seats and the Great Lawn, which accommodates an additional 7,000 people.

This state-of-the- art sound system, the first of its kind in the country, was designed to mimic the acoustics of an indoor concert hall by distributing enhanced sound equally over both the fixed seats and the lawn.

Park location: Great Lawn
Lounge on the Great Lawn and soak up sounds from the Jay Pritzker Pavilion's one-of-a-kind sound system. Bring a picnic, games, friends, and family to play, chat, stretch, eat and drink. Electronic music artists, local record label heads, music historians, expert DJs, record store impresarios, and a few surprise guests provide the sonic backdrop."

Give your mouse a night off and enjoy the Chicago-area debut of the groundbreaking Princeton Laptop Orchestra (better known as PLOrk), cofounded by Dan Trueman and Perry Cook. Using customized laptop computers and individual sound systems, this 20-member ensemble can sound like a full symphony orchestra, a jazz combo, or an electronica band. This exciting program will include works with solo acoustic violin, a piece with a dancing conductor covered with electronic touch pads, and two world premieres. Far from being preprogrammed, PLOrk musicians independently control dynamics, rhythm, and sound to create a true ensemble effect."
The good news is that you can either show up and hear music the way it ought to be, or tune in to a live webcast on the venue website: http://www.pickstaiger.org/
Just navigate to this page less than ten minutes before the concert (7:30) and a link will appear opening the feed in Real Player software. Apparently four cameras replete with boom stands will capture the action, so it should be great.

I'll be on the last piece, in which 10 percussionists are brought in to play wooden instruments with PLOrk.

JACK WRIGHT. After teaching at Temple University in the 1960s and leaving academia in the early 1970s to engage in radical politics and community organizing, by the late 1970s Wright directed his energies into music. He is one of a very small group of musicians in North America that has played improvised music exclusively since the 1970s. Through years of near constant touring, often performing for audiences in cities and towns where improvised music had never before been heard, he came to be regarded as something of an underground legend. He has deliberately eschewed the conventions and socio-aesthetic limitations of musical careerism to pursue his own vision. Although his de-professionalized approach sets him apart from most musicians at his level of accomplishment, his art has always grown, expanded, and synthesized new information. He is unquestionably an original and virtuosic saxophonist, a master improviser who is deeply lyrical, with humor never far away.

Today Wright tours frequently in Europe and North America (and in Japan in 2006), making new musical and human connections, bringing European musicians to the U.S. and bringing musicians everywhere together. His inspiration has provided crucial impetus to hundreds of musicians and has even motivated several people to establish music venues in order to present him and other improvisers (e.g. Baltimore’s High Zero festival). His vast list of collaborators includes some “name” luminaries (William Parker, Axel Dorner, Michel Doneda, Andrea Neumann, Denman Maroney, Bhob Rainey to name a few) but more significant are the many obscure greats he has played with. He has made over 40 recordings (many published on his own Spring Garden label), performed in over 20 countries, and written extensively and insightfully about music and society for journals such as Improjazz (France) and Signal to Noise (US), as well as his own website.

GREAT show with Aaron Zarzutzki, I guess it’ll be our record release show for Chicago. Annnnnnnd following us will be killer german extended-technique trumpeter birgit ulher and chicago legend eric leonardsen on his invention the springboard.

I'll be playing a set with Chicago sound artist Aaron Zarzutzki at Enemy. We'll be opening for Birgit Ulher and Eric Leonardson on Friday, October 5th at 9:00 PM.
Our music will be celebrating a live studio recording made on August 11, 2007 and released on Shark Bite Tapes. This recording is a snare drum duo which it has been serendipitously discovered is the ideal module for background music, hence is called "Furniture Songs". Although this is certainly not music Erik Satie envisioned when he championed furniture music, it can be listened to not only for its own merit as two musicians fully engaged in communicating with extended techniques, but also as a foil for revealing the unique sound sculpture enclosed by space to be found in its broadcast environment. My favorite activity to perform while listening is tidying up the apartment. Every sweep of the broom, turn of the faucet, retort of the closet door, and hum of the microwave take their place amongst the lilting scrapes and buzzes of the recording, and this results in an increased awareness of the musical qualities of accustomed sounds to the listener. The simultaneities and interruptions between real and recorded spaces affirm a deep sense of pulse, the stochastic rhythms of the physical world.

AARON ZARZUTZKI utilizes the manipulation of standing waves to produce his art spontaneously. Sometimes using nothing more than the voltage of a battery to excite a speaker cone, he will often make his music from the vibration caused by the motion of sound, rather than the sound itself.

JOSHUA MANCHESTER believes in the power of music to express the inexpressible, and places great trust in a spirit of experimentalism and continual discovery to fulfill his vision of bettering the human mind. While having a strong background in traditional music, many diverse musical influences have shaped his experience. Performing with artists, dancers, jazz improvisers, field recordists, noise rock bands, symphony orchestras, funeral marching bands, Javanese gamelans, and animals has taught this percussionist that music can be much more than striking resonant objects to a beat.

BIRGIT ULHER studied the visual arts, which still have an important influence on her music - for example the abstract painting in its materiality or the Fluxus-movement with its affinity to music. Since moving to Hamburg in 1982 she has been involved in free improvisation, co-founding a musicians collective, dance-projects and solo-performances, played often in occasional / once-only groupings with many of the European and American improvisers. Music Performances in Europe and USA, together with UNSK (Birgit Ulher / Martin Küchen / Lise-Lott Norelius / Raymond Strid), Jürgen Morgenstern, Martin Klapper (CD-Momentaufnahmen), the Trio PUT (with Ulrich Phillipp und Roger Turner) (CD-Umlaut), Nordzucker (mit Lars Scherzberg und Michael Maierhof), Tim Hodgkinson, Dorothea Schürch, Ernst Thoma, Rhodri Davies, Söres Zsolt, Robyn Schulkowsky, Sven-Ake Johansson, John Edwards, Michael Zerang, Damon Smith, Lou Mallozzi, Gino Robair, Martin Blume, Albert Markos and Ute Wassermann.

ERIC LEONARDSON is a composer, radio artist, sound designer, instrument inventor, and improviser. His work in the field of experimental music and sound began in Chicago, where in the mid-80s he helped found the Experimental Sound Studio and direct one of Chicago’s first internationally broadcast radio art programs. He has created sound design and music for films, video, theater, and dance, notably for South African choreographer Robyn Orlin and since 1995, for Plasticene, one of Chicago’s foremost experimental theater companies. Leonardson’s music is distinguished by the unique sounds of his self-built instrument, the “springboard”. Leonardson's music has been described as "...ritualistic music, electronically synthesized industrial vibrations miraculously created with ordinary household objects...."..Carol Burbank, Chicago Reader. Leonardson also performs with experimental, creative musicians and sound artists from Chicago and the world at large, and teaches at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Enemy is located at 1550 N. Milwaukee Ave 3rd floor, Chicago, Illinois 60622.

FRIDAY FEBRUARY 16 7:00-10:00

The performances at the February installment of Music + Art, organized by Joshua Manchester, will serve to remind that giving the performers some choice in the composition process is a good thing, and may more effectively highlight any goals composers sought to undertake when composing in the first place. Free improvisation is a good starting point, and since there are those who scoff at the idea of improvisation as inward and limiting (and even John Cage said he used chance to free himself from his likes and dislikes) it is hoped that this concert will point out that successes of many prominent abstract classical pieces in the last century were credited largely by the brute naturalist intelligence, the appeal and zest of a fine performer.

The Sets:

The musicians include :
Cliff Ingram, guitar
The guitar-drums duo of Ingram and Manchester marks a decided endeavor to explore musical understatement, a project that, by considering its relationship with "silence," respects some of the more restrained acoustic qualities of its instrumentation. The resulting compositional vehicles therefore take on a kind of "slow motion slight of hand," in which exposition and obfuscation are readily available elements to be shuffled. This invitation into process, however, is rendered more enticing by means of the duo's constant exploration of fresh, cinematic coloration.
Cliff produced some harmonic frameworks on which to base improvisations.
http://www.joshuamanchester.com/Ingram.htm
Guillermo Gregorio, reeds
"Given that he was born into a musical household in the musical capital of Buenos Aires, Argentina in the early 1940s, it came as little surprise to anyone that the cerebral and artistically inclined Guillermo Gregorio was drawn to jazz as a teenager. While he initially played Chicago-style jazz, exposure as a young man to the groundbreaking modern jazz of musicians like Ornette Coleman as well as 20th century classical music and early musique concrete inspired Gregorio to begin his career-long exploration of the boundaries of sound. His education in the visual culture of modernist design and architecture also had a profound effect on his work. During the '60s, influenced by the work of social critics, philosophers, writers, and visual artists, Gregorio turned away from public performance and began to experiment in his home studio, where he pursued improvisation, overdubbing, and assorted tape collages." -Jesse Ashlock
"Gregorio also took part in the activities of the Fluxus-like performance-group Movimiento Música Mús, the Experimental Group of Buenos Aires and the Group of Contemporary Music of La Plata, with results ranging from multi-media spectacles to experimental concerts and a modern repertoire. In the mid 1980s Gregorio left Buenos Aires and went firstly to Europe and then to the USA, where he is still living and working. In Chicago in 2001 he founded the Madi Ensemble, which is concerned with the bases of various Argentinean avant-garde styles. He also teaches at the Purdue University and was awarded a grant in a promotional program of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra's." -Haus der Kulturen der Welt

Josh believes in the power of music to express the inexpressible, and places great trust in a spirit of experimentalism and continual discovery to fulfill his vision of bettering the human mind. Joshua Manchester is an innovative performer and instructor in the field of percussion. In addition to being a regular member of the MAVerick ensemble, he performs with Civic Performers Innovative Music, Sonic Inertia and Accessible Contemporary Music as well as a regular participant in Chicago Composer’s Forum projects. Joshua has recently collaborated with percussionists of the International Contemporary Ensemble on a concert of works by Augusta Reed Thomas and Ryan Ingebritsen, premiered works with the Cube Ensemble, undertaken national tours as an improviser, and provides classical percussion in numerous orchestras in Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana and Iowa. In addition to his position as adjunct percussion instructor at St. Xavier University, Joshua teaches a private studio at the Sherwood Music Conservatory.

He often collaborates and performs with new music composers, including Mei-Fang Lin and William Jason Raynovich, and has also studied composition with Herbert Brun and Susan Parenti. Working with artists such as Steve Lacy by providing music for art installations has proven immensely rewarding. After spending two years performing with a Javanese gamelan and studying the Indian Tabla, lately Joshua has begun studies with the berimbeau.
Joshua holds a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education from Luther College and a Master of Music in Percussion Performance and Literature from the University of Illinois. Joshua has studied with renowned percussionists John Herndon, Thomas Siwe, William Moersch, Michael Geary, and Andre Beasley.

These works will be prepared, improvised, or a combination of both. For instance, a Chicago-based poet might collaborate with a Japanese videographer, a Chicago-based jazz ensemble might improvise with a London-based dance troupe, and so on. The first Chicago Calling collaboration will begin at 12 AM Wednesday, October 25 and the events will continue for 24 hours. The 25th was chosen because it is Pablo Picasso's birthday.
